"जल्लीकट्टू" पर पांच पर्सपेक्ट‍िव

1) किसी भी रवायत पर यह कह देना भर काफ़ी नहीं है कि यह हमारी "कल्चर" है। क्योंकि "कल्चर" अपने आपमें कोई "एब्सोल्यूट वैल्यू" नहीं होती है, जिस पर कभी कोई सवाल ही नहीं उठाए जा सकते हों। वह हमेशा "इवॉल्व" होती रहती है, और होनी ही चाहिए। लिहाज़ा यह कहना कोई दलील नहीं कि यह हमारी सांस्कृतिक परंपरा है, इसलिए हम इसको जारी रखेंगे।
2) इसके साथ ही, ऐसा भी नहीं है कि "कल्चर" या "परंपरा" होनेभर से ही कोई चीज़ घृणित हो जाती है, जैसा कि हमारे "लिबरल" बंधुओं को लगता है। वास्तव में सांस्कृतिक परंपराओं का "लोकचेतना" में बड़ा महत्व है और "उत्तर-आधुनिकता" से लेकर "ओरियंटलिज़्म" तक की अनेक "थ्योरिटिकल स्टडीज़" का आशय लोकपरंपराओं को "सेलिब्रेट" करना ही रहा है। हालांकि, तब बस इतना भर देखना होता है कि कहीं ये परंपराएं हमारे "पर्यावास" को क्षति तो नहीं पहुंचा रही हैं।
3) "जल्लीकट्टू" के परिप्रेक्ष्य में उन लोगों का यह मनोरथ तो सुस्पष्ट है कि यह खेल उम्दा नस्ल के बैलों की पहचान करने के प्राथमिक मक़सद से खेला जाता है। तमिल ग्राम्य-जीवन की आर्थ‍िकी भी इन बैलों के पोषण और विक्रय पर केंद्रित रहती है। फिर, उसमें लोकविनोद वाला क्रीड़ानुकूल भाव तो है ही। यानी, "जल्लीकट्टू" का प्राथमिक मक़सद किसी पशु को प्रताड़ित करके उस विनोद में सुख पाना नहीं है, जैसा कि "स्पैनिश बुलफ़ाइटिंग" में होता है, या किसी पशु को एक "काल्पनिक ईश्वर" को प्रसन्न कर देने के लिए क़त्ल कर देना नहीं है, जैसे कि एक संप्रदाय विशेष के एक "पिशाच-पर्व" के तहत व्यापक पैमाने पर होता है, या किसी "फ़ूड हैबिट" के "लोकतांत्रिक स्वातंत्र्य" के व्यवहार के चलते उसका भक्षण कर जाना नहीं है, जैसा कि "स्लॉटरहाउस" से लेकर आपकी "डायनिंग टेबल" तक एक रक्तपिंड को पहुंचाने वाले विश्व-व्यवहृत मांसाहार के तहत होता है।
4) और इसके बावजूद, ऐसा नहीं है कि "जल्लीकट्टू" के कारण पशुओं को किसी प्रकार का कष्ट ना होता हो। ठीक वैसे ही, जैसे इस उत्सव में सहभागिता करने वालों के सामने भी गंभीर रूप से ज़ख़्मी होने के ख़तरे हमेशा बने रहते हैं। हम उस दुनिया में जीते हैं, जहां पर कोई फिल्म प्रारंभ होने से पहले यह "डिस्क्लेमर" दिखाना आवश्यक होता है कि इस फिल्म के निर्माण की प्रक्रिया में किसी पशु को कष्ट नहीं पहुंचाया गया है, वहीं दूसरी ओर, पशुओं के साथ अंतहीन क्रूरताओं और हत्याओं का सिलसिला भी जारी रहता है। यह एक सुपरिचित मानवीय पाखंड है।
5) तिस पर मैं कहूंगा, अगर हम "एनिमल राइट्स" को लेकर इतने ही संवेदनशील हैं, तो इससे बढ़कर ख़ुशी की बात कोई दूसरी नहीं हो सकती और तब "जल्लीकट्टू" पर तत्काल प्रभाव से रोक लगाई ही जानी चाहिए। लेकिन, तब यह "सिलेक्ट‍िव सिम्पैथी" नहीं होनी चाहिए और पशुओं के विरुद्ध होने वाले हर प्रकार के अत्याचारों और क्रूरताओं के विरुद्ध हमारा वही रुख़ रहना चाहिए। इसका आशय मांसाहार और बलिप्रथा पर पूर्ण प्रतिबंध के सिवा और कुछ नहीं हो सकता। क्योंकि जो विवेक "कंसिस्टेंट" नहीं होता है, उसका दूसरा नाम "हिप्पोक्रेसी" होता है। और अलबत्ता मनुष्यता में "हिप्पोक्रेसी" के अस्त‍ित्व पर भले मुझे रंचमात्र भी संदेह ना हो, लेकिन जगत के समक्ष उसकी पुष्ट‍ि होते देखना मेरे लिए संतोष का विषय अवश्य हमेशा से रहा आया है। अस्तु।

Govt to import Gir bull semen from Brazil

TNNThe bulls whose semen are to be imported are descendants of those gifted to Brazil by the maharaja of Bhavnagar before Independence.

Gandhinagar: The state government has decided to import from Brazil 10,000 doses of Gir bull semen as the cow population of this prestigious breed has declined in Gujarat.

Interestingly, the bulls whose semen are to be imported are descendants of those gifted to Brazil as a goodwill gesture by the maharaja of Bhavnagar before Independence.

Gir cows have long been the pride of Gujarat with their very high milk yield. The obsession with Jersey cows and indiscriminate breeding has led to the decline of Gir cow population in the state to nearly seven lakh out of the two crore milk-giving breeds.

Brazil, on the other hand, was careful to preserve the breed and now has a sizable population of Gir breed cows and bulls.

Mona Khandhar, secretary, the animal husbandry department, said, "Scientifically selected bull semen is being imported from Brazil for artificial insemination to increase the number of native breeds namely Gir and Kankrej. The government has also granted Rs 50 lakh for this project." Ironically , the move has not gone down well with the state's own Gau Seva Ayog (Cow Welfare Commission) that suspects Gir cows and bulls of Brazil may no longer be a pure breed.

Dr Vallabh Kathiriya, chairman, Gau Seva Ayog, claimed that Gujarat has enough good quality Gir bulls."We have started giving a bull to every village panchayat in an effort to increase the number of Gir cows. There is no need to import semen from Brazil," he said.

Other experts, however, believe that there is no risk in importing semen from Brazil.Dr K B Kathiriya, head of research department, Anand Agriculture University , said the chances of increasing the population of Gir breed cows through artificial insemination is close to 90%.

10 Companies That Control Almost Everything We Eat & Drink

Scour the aisles of the grocery store, and you may be astonished to find just how many types of Pringles there are out there. But while there seems to be no end to the diversity of junk food, a comprehensive infographic has been put together to show you just how few corporations provide us with the hundreds of products available at our fingertips.

Oxfam International created the infographic that exposes an inconceivable reality: Just 10 main corporations manufacture the majority of what we purchase at the market.

“What we did is we took certain issues … [and] we saw the kind of impacts they had on the ground,” Chris Jochnick of Oxfam told NPR. “We released reports about those issues and those impacts and how they’re tied to the 10 largest food and beverage companies. And then we pushed the companies to begin to address them.”

You may not normally associate makers of soda with makers of granola bars, but seeing these unlikely ties that form the “Big 10” of the food and beverage industry controlling what we put in our carts proves just how easy it is to be duped by the American food system. For instance, PepsiCo produces Quaker granola bars, while Nestlé makes frozen California Pizza Kitchen pies. Want to feel even more misinformed? Pineapple Fanta doesn’t come from a tropical island at all, but is canned at the Coca-Cola factory, just like Barq’s root beer.

“These corporations are so powerful that their policies can have a major impact on the diets and working conditions of people worldwide, as well as on the environment,” noted Alexander E.M. Hess in USA Today.

The fact that you can count on just two hands who controls our groceries is a bizarre thought, but a much-needed realization. They include: PepsiCo, General Mills, Kellogg’s, Associated British Foods, Mondēlez (formerly Kraft Foods), Mars, Danone, Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Nestle.

Even more disturbing is the fact that it’s not just the junk food that’s involved. These giant corporations make it extremely difficult for startups and small businesses to compete at all. Furthermore, while OxFam America only examined the top-earning companies for its campaign, natural brands have been a part of big buyouts, too. So while you may opt for brands you consider to be better choices, liked Naked Juice and Garden of Eatin’ all-natural chips, many of our favourite alternatives still cost more but are now owned by the very companies we’re trying to avoid, like Coca-Cola and General Mills.

Also disturbing is the environmental impact these companies are having on the health of our planet. As Business Insider reported, “the Big 10 emitted 263.7 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2013 and if the companies were a nation, it would be the 25th most polluting country in the world.”

To take action, you can help by steering clear of the Big 10 altogether. That means being aware of everything they manufacture, and ensuring you don’t buy any of those products. Choose to shop at your local farmers’ markets, and continue to do your research when it comes to the small-scale brands you love, because you never know when they may get bought out, too.
